2021-2022 Season – 24th September 2021

After the long break in competitive table tennis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the wait is almost over and the new season is due to start in October 2021.

New teams and players are always welcome and even after the season has started, it may be possible to integrate new individual players into teams which may need replacements or reserves, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch at any stage.

Final League Standings 2019-2020 Season

The outbreak of coronavirus and the subsequent national lockdown brought the 2019-2020 season to a premature conclusion with a handful of fixtures remaining to be played. As teams had not played an equal number of matches when the season closed, the League Committee decided to award points for the outstanding matches on a ‘points per match already played’ basis. As a result, the final top three for each division were as follows:

Division 1

Winners: North Mundham Assassins

Runners Up: North Mundham Fanatics

3rd: North Mundham Crusaders

Division 2

Winners: Arundel Eagles

Runners Up: Bognor Logheads

3rd: North Mundham Gladiators

Leading Player Averages Division 1

1. Gary Masters (North Mundham Crusaders) 100%

2. Paul Keates (Felpham Lions) 91%

3. Kris Pokorowski (North Mundham Fanatics) 85%

4. Will Kirke (North Mundham Fanatics) 78%

5. Peter Reid (Felpham Lions) 76%

Leading Player Averages Division 2

1. Geoff Horn (Bognor Cobras) 100%

2. Morgan Turner (Arundel Eagles) 91%

3. Gary Turner (Arundel Eagles) 85%

Basil Boxall celebrates 70 years as a league player (June 2017)

At the 2017 AGM, a special award was made to Basil Boxall, honouring his achievement in participating in the League for over 70 years!

Basil (left) receives his award from SWSTTL Chairman Chris Newberry.

2017-2018 Season at the Halfway Mark (December 2017)

The 2017-2018 has reached the halfway mark, although due to a number of postponements not all the designated matches have been played yet. Noth Mundham Fanatics are the surprise leaders in Division 1, although Arundel Hawks are dangerously poised on their shoulders with a game in hand. Newly promoted Eastergate Tigers are finding life hard in the top division, but although they are bottom without a win, they are still in touching distance of North Mundham Vipers and Bognor Tigers. In Division 2, last year’s runners-up Selsey Seals are in pole position after five wins out of five, closely followed by Arundel Finches.

On an individual basis, four Division 1 players are maintaining a 100% record so far – Adam Corell & Mike White (Arundel Hawks), Alan Gess (North Mundham Fanatics) and Paul Keates (Eatergate Lions). In Division 2, there are also four unbeaten players – Dave Steel (Arundel Steels), Simon Bradley (Selsey Seals),  Geoff Horne (Bognor Cobras) and Makesh Andani (Bognor Cobras) who is new to the league and has played just the one game so far.

Jarek Dominates North Mundham Hard Bat Tournament (September 2017)

Well done to Jarek Klamut for his performance in the North Mundham Hard Bat 2017 competition, winning the singles and also the doubles with his partner Gerry Hull. In the singles, Jarek beat Alan Pickering in the QF and Peter Baldwin in the SF to set up a Final against Gary Masters who had come through against Chris Newberry in the QF and Keith Corell in the SF. The Final was a close fought match, ending 2-1, with Jarek raising his game towards the end of a close final set. The Final of the doubles followed a similar pattern, with Keith Corell and Ian Taylor failing to capitalise on 3 match points, leaving Jarek and Gerry to win the final set 17-15. Special thanks to Gary Masters for organising the event.

Last Chance to Enter 2017 Summer League (June 2017)

There is still time to enter this year’s Summer League – please download the form here.

The competition is a relaxed social event and ideal for beginners wishing to get a taste of the competitive side of table tennis. All games are played on a handicap basis, so that all standards of players start off equal. All are welcome!

Annual General Meeting – Change of Date

Please note that, due to a hall booking change, the Annual General Meeting will now take place at North Mundham Village Hall at 8.00pm on Monday 5th June and not the following day as printed in the handbook.
If you have any items that you would like discussed at the meeting, please let the League Secretary know as soon as possible so that he can include them in the Agenda, which he will send round prior to the 5th. So, if there is any aspect of the way the league operates that you believe could be improved, or anything that you would like clarity on, please consider putting it forward for discussion.

Roger Ginnaw (April 2017)

2016-2017 Season Finishes (April 2017)

The 2016-2017 season has finished, with Arundel Hawks winning the Division 1 title ahead of North Mundham Assassins in second place. Congratulations go to the Arundel team of Mike White, Adam Corell and Ivan Gardner – and their reserves Lewis Gardner and Jason Morley. Arundel finished the season unbeaten.

Celebrating becoming Division 2 champions and gaining promotion to Division 1 are Eastergate Tigers who also went through the season unbeaten. Congratulations to Alan Brackenbury, Peter Crosby and Darren Wadey. Second place went to Selsey Seals, in their first season in the league.

Special mention goes to Jarek Klamut for completing another season with a 100% record in Division 1. Two players emulated this feat in Division 2, both Geoff Horn and Dave Steel winning all their matches.

Ridgewell-Smith Handicap Cup Final (March 2017)

On 28th March at Eastergate Village Hall, North Mundham Vipers beat Eastergate Lions 8 – 1.5 to lift the trophy. Despite the scoreline, the match was closely contested between these two Division 1 sides.

Jarek Klamut Wins Horsham Spinners Event (July 2016)

25 players from 10 separate clubs in Sussex & Surrey took part in the final Horsham Spinners Circuit tournament of the season on Saturday 16th July. The event was well organised on the day by Lynne Trussell. The format was the usual round robin groups of 6 or 7, with all players in each band playing each other. There were 4 bands (A-D). Brighton City TTC players won both Bands C & D, while Band A was won by an Arundel TTC player and Band B by a Crawley TTC player.
Band A:
Jarek Klamut (Arundel TTC) won all of his matches in Band A to get the gold medal, but he had to work hard to beat runner-up Phil Snelson (Burymead TTC) 11-9 in the 5th set, despite having been 2-1 up & having led 10-6 in the 4th end. Phil in turn was pushed all the way to 12-10 in the 5th set by Tommy Cheang (Hollingbury TTC), who finished in 3rd place. Lynne Trussell (Foresters TTC), came 4th, with wins over Owen Brown (Horsham Spinners TTC) and Jacob Evans (Horsham TTC). Jacob beat Owen in the 5th set to get 5th place.
Horsham Spinners Circuit 16-7-16 Band A
Band B:
As in Band A, it was adult players who got the top 3 places in Band B. However, in Band B no player was undefeated. Both Rob Poplutz & Ferenc Moor (Both from Crawley TTC), won 4 matches each, but since Rob beat Ferenc 3 games to 2, he got the gold medal and Ferenc the silver. The match which Rob lost was vs 5th placed Ed Cozens (Horsham Spinners TTC) and the score was 11-8 in the 5th set, which shows how competitive a band it was. Further evidence of this was seen by Ferenc winning 3 of his matches in the deciding 5th set vs Lewis Gardner & Nathan White (both Arundel TTC) and also vs Jonathan Chernett (Graham Spicer TTC). Jonathan came 3rd with 3 wins, including 5th set victories over both Arundel players. Lewis & Ed both won 2 matches, but Lewis finished higher, since he beat Ed. Although Nathan didn’t win any, he took 2 opponents to 5 sets and took an end off 2 players.
Band C:
Band C was dominated by Brighton City TTC cadet players. Charlie Ollerenshaw beat team mate Alessio Marrocco surprisingly comfortably 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 in the decisive match to get the gold medal. Both players won their remaining matches. However, it was not all plain sailing for these two. Charlie won 2 matches in the 5th set, over Pisti Olexa (Horsham Spinners TTC) and Rorie Leonnard (Arundel TTC) and Alessio also beat Pisti in five. Rorie came 3rd, with 4 wins, just dropping 2 ends in his victorious matches. There was a 3-way count-back for 4th, 5th & 6th place, as Andy Couchman (Crawley TTC), Pisti & Louie Harris (Horsham Spinners TTC) all won 2 matches each. After count-back they finished in the order listed. Rio Alvarez (Brighton City TTC) didn’t get any wins, but lost 2 matches in 5 sets & 2 matches in 4 sets.
Band D:
Band D was a band of ‘two halves’. The top 3 were a level stronger than the bottom 3 and also at least 3 years older. Daniel Blyth (Brighton City TTC), in his first circuit competition, won the band, winning all 5 of his matches, but was extended to 5 ends by Finbar Murphy (Arundel TTC). Charlotte Jenkins (Crawley TTC) came 2nd, winning 4 matches 3-0, but losing to Daniel in 4 sets. Finbar came 3rd with 3 wins in straight sets. Marti Petrov (Horsham Spinners TTC) came 4th, beating Rylie Leonnard 11-9 in the 5th set. Rylie came 5th, beating James High (Slinfold School TTC).
Positions:
Band A:
1) Jarek Klamut (Arundel TTC)
2) Phil Snelson (Burymead TTC)
3) Tommy Cheang (Hollingbury TTC)
4) Lynne Trussell (Foresters TTC)
5) Jacob Evans (Horsham TTC)

MSTTA A Win the Division One Title (May 2016)

Congratulations to MSTTA A – Jarek Klamut, Artur Kuznicki, Mateusz Sadlowski and Krzysztof Paraficz – on winning the Division 1 title with 15 victories and one draw, which came against 2nd placed Arundel Kestrels (who were last year’s Champions, as Arundel Leopards).

North Mundham Crusaders took 3rd place, with Eastergate Lions 4th. Last year’s runners-up, North Mundham Assassins came 5th. At the other end of the table, Bognor Tigers and North Mundham Vipers ended the season with identical points tallies and records and could only be separated by their head-to-head results, with a win/draw in Vipers’ favour leaving Bognor Tigers at the bottom.

MSTTA B Seal Division Two Title With Victory in Final Match (May 2016)

Congratulations to MSTTA B (Richard Steel, Morgan Steel, Max Steel and Wiki Brewka on Winning Division 2.

The final match of the SWSTTL Division 2 season saw a postponed match deciding top spot with MSTTA B needing just two 2 points to tie for top spot, as they were holding all the cards with a 6 point advantage over Eastergate Tigers. If Eastergate were going to win then they needed a 9-1 victory for an outright win and avoiding a count back. This was going to be a tall order for the Eastergate side if Richard Steel, who had a 100% average, was going to play.

Richard did play and like a true captain sealed the victory for his team winning all three of his games with relative ease. Wicki Brewka won two beating Peter Crosby 6/11 13/11 11/7 and 12/10 and Alan Brackenbury 11/4 11/2 11/4. But it was a completely different story when she came across Darren Wadey who in turn beat Wicki 11/2 11/5 and 11/5. Unfortunately it was not Morgan Steel’s night, as he won the first two matches against Alan only to lose the following three and he also lost against Peter and Darren. With the doubles going to five sets, Richard and Wiki sealed the victory.

Eastergate Triumph in Handicap Cup Final (March 2016)

The Handicap Cup final took place on Tuesday 22nd March at Eastergate Village hall between Eastergate Tigers and MSTTA B.

Richard Steel decided not to play so the teams were :

Eastergate Tigers : Richard Crosby (28), Darren Wadey (25) and Alan Brackenbury (28).

MSTTA B : Wiki Brewka (25), Max Steel (27) and Morgan Steel (30)

This was a great match between 3 experienced all round defensive players and 3 young quick attacking players and could have gone either way, but eventually Eastergate triumphed 5 – 4 1/2.

Richard took on Morgan for the 1st game and won the first set comfortably 11-4, but Morgan struck back winning 11-7, after this it was a close game with the next 2 sets going Richard’s way 11-7, 11-10, but the damage had been done in the 1st set and Richard won by 40 points to 38.

Darren then took on Wiki who played a positive attacking game, but Darren’s defence was too good and he took the set 11-9. In the second set Darren attacked and defended well to win 11-6, but Wiki stepped up the game to win the next set 11-10, but lost the last set 10-11 to give Darren the win 37-35.

Max came out against Alan determined to attack, but Alan defended well, changing the pace and spin and Max’s frustration got the better of him, and he lost the set 3-11. The second set went much the same as the first, but after this with some calming words from Richard, Max started to topspin the ball and concentrate on his shots, winning the next set 11-10, before losing the last set 10-11 to lose 25-48.

3-0 to Eastergate

Darren was next against Morgan, but he had to concede 9 points and Morgan took full advantage of his attack to win the 1st set 11-7. In the second and third sets Darren defended brilliantly, moving Morgan round the table and catching him out of position, winning 11-7 and 11-4. In the 4th set Morgan attacked hard using his forehand to drive Darren back, eventually winning 11-9. This was enough to take the game 42-38.

Peter then played Max who had found his rhythm and won the first 2 sets 11-8. Peter struck back in the 3rd to win 11-5, before Max took the last 11-6 to win the game 38-35.

Wiki who had to concede 6 points to Alan struggled in the first 2 sets against Alan’s defence and lost these 11-10 and 11-8, but then pulled out some excellent spin serves against which Alan had no answer, either returning off the table or setting up Wiki’s attack and he lost these 11-6 losing 39-40.

3-3.

Max against Darren saw Darren take the first 3 sets 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, before Max gained the confidence to attack, winning the last 11-7, but it was not enough, Darren winning 40-38.

Alan against Morgan was one of the best games of the night with Morgan attacking and Alan chopping back from the table and picking balls up just above the floor. This purple patch lasted for the first 3 sets winning 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 before Morgan fought hard, just losing the last set 10-11, Alan winning 44-36.

The last game between Wiki and Peter was just as good, with Wiki’s attack and Peter chopping and floating the ball, it was hard fought all the way, Peter lost the first 2 sets 11-7 and 11-5, before winning the 3rd 11-8 and just losing the 4th 11-10.

After their defeat in the League it was a delighted Eastergate team who all played very well who triumphed on the night.

A big thank you to Eastergate for hosting it and an special thanks go to Alan Brackenbury’s wife who served some lovely home made cakes, scones and biscuits.

Balls for the 2015-2016 Season (September 2015)

The SWSTTL Committee’s decision on which balls (the old celluloid or the new plastic balls) should be used for the coming 2015-2016 season was that the Home team should be free to choose.

In the interests of making it easier for players participating in tournaments and national/regional leagues, Table Tennis England recommends the use of the new ball, but while the celluloid balls remain on the ITTF approved list clubs are permitted to continue to use them. Lois Peake stars for England Junior Girls in Bratislava (July 2015)

Congratulations to Lois on winning the deciding rubber against Belgium as England’s Junior Girls team clinched seventh place at the European Youth Championships in Bratislava in July.

Although Lois lost the opening match to Marie Maesen, leaving England needing to win all the remaining matches, they duly did, with Tin-Tin Ho beating Margo Degraef and Maesen before Lois won a see-saw clash with Degraef in the fifth set.

Lois, Tin-Tin and Maria Tsaptsinos had beaten Greece, Finland, Bosnia, Estonia and Germany in previous rounds.

Lois, who started out with North Mundham TTC, is now ranked at No. 3 for England Women U-21s and at No. 8 for England Senior Women.
